DTT Engineering Test Transmissions |
RTÉNL has begun test transmissions from a number of transmission sites. These are:
Clermont Carn, Co. Louth Three Rock, Co. Dublin Greystones, Co. Wicklow Kippure, Co. Wicklow Mount Leinster Co. Carlow Dungarvan, Co. Waterford Spur Hill, Co. Cork Mullaganish, Co. Cork Woodcock Hill, Co. Limerick, Maghera, Co. Clare Cairn Hill, Co. Longford Truskmore, Co. Sligo Holywell Hill, Co.Donegal
Some satellite viewers in the Cork city area and those in the Greystones, Delgany, Kilcoole and Newcastle areas of Co. Wicklow, may experience difficulties if they use the UHF output from their satellite receivers, rather than a SCART lead, to connect to the aerial input of the television set. This arises as the UHF output from most Sky receivers is tuned to channel 68. We recommend that these receivers should be re-tuned to channel 38. Satellite viewers experiencing difficulties should contact their local installer or Sky service agent for further information on how to change the output channel of the satellite receiver. Please note that these are TEST transmissions and, as such, are subject to disruption which can be of duration of anything from a few hours to a number of days or even weeks while the service is being developed. |
Mast News |
New Masts at Mullaganish & Truskmore
RTÉNL is building new masts at its sites at Mullaganish on the Cork-Kerry border, and at Truskmore, Co. Sligo to replace the existing ones, beginning immediately and concluding in late Autumn 2009.
The present masts were built in 1960 in preparation for the introduction of RTÉ Television in 1961 and are approaching the end of their useful lives. Now is the ideal time to build the new masts in readiness for digital.
Mullaganish The existing mast has a height of 170m whereas the new one will be 220m tall. This increased height will facilitate better coverage from this site, delivering an improved service to viewers and listeners.
Truskmore The existing mast has a height of 135m whereas the new one will be 175m tall. Again, the increased height will facilitate better coverage from this site, delivering an improved service to viewers and listeners.
The preparatory work on both sites was completed in 2008 and construction of the two masts is now under way. The new masts will be erected alongside the existing ones which will stay in place until the new ones are completed and commissioned. It is envisaged that, weather permitting, the work on both sites will be completed in late autumn this year. For a period of time there will be two masts on each site while antennas are transferred from the old one to the new one. The old masts will then be taken down.
While work is going on, there may be some disruption to television and radio signals from Mullaganish and Truskmore. This will be minimised as far as possible and we ask that you bear with us while the masts are being built. Ultimately, the results will be worthwhile for viewers and listeners in Cork & Kerry; and Sligo, Leitrim, North Mayo, Northwest Cavan, and South Donegal |

High Definition Television ( HDTV) |
High-definition television, or HDTV, is the ultimate home entertainment experience, bringing sound and picture quality to a whole new level. HDTVs or HD ready TVs are already in the shops. All we are waiting for is content and a transmission service. More and more major events are now being shot in HD. Most broadcasters plan to move to HD. In view of this, any development of the DTT platform has to plan to provide capacity for a number of HDTV services
